Dark Gun, ChiChi and Moon – Three Comics For Kickstarter
John Odum writes for Bleeding Cool,
It won't be news to readers here that crowd-funding is the Holy Grail of independent comics creators and those trying to break into the industry. And it works. According to James Moore writing for The Independent back in May, 64% of comics projects are getting funded at Kickstarter – and for proposals with 25 or more backers, that already impressive number leaps to a whopping 80%.
Over at Kickstarter, the grand poohbah of crowd-sourcing, those numbers are really brought home when you flip though the site and see just how many have already reached their goal. The cream does tend to float to the top – but not always. There are always diamonds in the rough.
A lot of the proposals are highly derivative (of course), and there are some familiar titles sprinkled in, but there are also some pretty interesting brand new ideas. With that in mind, here are a few projects currently looking for help. Of course there are many, many more – both from creators who already have resumes to the brand new talent. It's definitely worth a regular look, if you aren't stopping by regularly already.
Mark Durand & Taylan Kurtulus
The Dark Gun looks intriguing. The story, about a US Cavalryman in the old west who gradually becomes possessed by a mysterious handgun, has potential in a lot of ways. The only challenge is that it's crafted as a mere 20 pages, which leaves little space to flesh out the premise's potential, but creators note their desire to develop it into anthology series, so hopefully this initial project can serve to whet the appetite for more.
The Dark Gun is 66% funded with 11 days to go.

ChiChi follows a 13 year old girl who embarks on a journey to resue her 8 year old brother who was abducted by a "mysterious entity" (no word on where the parents are). ChiChi is aided by a talking AI glove, but this is no "Demon With a Glass Hand," infused as it is with what looks looks to be a lot of action seen through a bright, snappy art style. Looks like fun.
ChiChi is looking to meet it's all-or-nothing goal by mid-September.
Rosie Hathaway
Creator Rosie Hathaway has self-published a small handful of other comics and zines. She says very little about the project on the Kickstarter page or the promotional video, simply that she "came up with the idea from one of many conversations with my partner's four-year-old son when we saw a large disc inside a storage container on a building site and he told me it looked like the moon." It's hard to say exactly what sort of content your contribution would actually be funding, but the simple-but-heart-tugging art makes me want to find out.
Moon is 66% funded with 11 days remaining.
… and then there's "The Pride Volume One Paperback Edition – LGBTQ+ Superheroes" (boasting "280 pages of accessible LGBTQ+ superhero action for everyone!"), created by some guy…
