Gerry Duggan and Aaron Kuder to Disassemble the Guardians of the Galaxy in Infinity Countdown

"With a CRASH and a BANG," according to a press release sent out by Marvel Comics, "the cosmic strike of the Countdown begins as the greatest epic in the history of the Infinity Stones explodes onto the pages of INFINITY COUNTDOWN! And it's a beginning so huge, it can only be told in one sweeping, mind-bending tale."

That's right. We now know why Marvel "canceled" Guardians of the Galaxy. In March, the creative team of Gerry Duggan and Aaron Kuder are writing a new event comic, Infinity Countdown, which will lead into a super-mega-crossover event comic that will "impact the entire Marvel Universe" just in time for the release of Avengers: Infinity War in May. The concept:

The Infinity Stones, thought to be lost forever, have suddenly reappeared — bringing with them the ultimate power for good and evil. Three stones have fallen into the hands of the mightiest heroes in the galaxy…but where are the rest?

As the hunt for the stones begins, a new weapon of unimaginable power is being forged…and it's a weapon like nothing the universe has ever seen! What is its purpose? And who – or what – is the destructive force that will be unleashed on the world? The race for power in the post Secret Wars universe has begun, and its search will impact every Marvel character from the street to the cosmos, from the Avengers to Spider-Man to the X-Men, even bringing about the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy!

"As we worked on the Infinity Stones' story, it became clear the story was much bigger than we could contain in the Guardians of the Galaxy series," said ukulele-playing editor Jordan D. White. "It starts with the Guardians, but the story extends out into the entire Marvel Universe, with stones popping up in some VERY surprising places. Countdown is the next step in the story… but as the name implies, it's leading to something even greater."

It all starts in February with the oversized Infinity Countdown Prime by Duggan and Mike Deodato, described as "an action-filled 48-page epic that reveals the location of all six stones as the countdown begins… plus, a prose primer that details the saga of the Infinity Stones, and how they came to be in the Marvel Universe!"

Then we get Infinity Countdown #1 (of 5) in March, and in a shocking deviation from the Marvel event comic formula, "Duggan and Kuder bring Marvel's heroes together in a battle for power, leading our heroes down a dark path towards the world's possible inevitable end!" Well, at least it's not heroes vs. heroes, and nobody is a space-Nazi… yet.

And it wouldn't be a Marvel press release without threatening to shatter something, so:

And this is only the start of a story that will grow bigger – get ready as this five part epic sets the stage for an earth-shattering tale that will change the Marvel Universe forever.

And also:

And be prepared for the Guardians of the Galaxy to disassemble!

Not like this!

Take out a new credit card, folks. This one could last a while.

About Jude Terror

A prophecy once said that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero would come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events.

Sadly, that prophecy was wrong. Oh, Jude Terror was right. For ten years. About everything. But nobody listened. And so, Jude Terror has moved on to a more important mission: turning Bleeding Cool into a pro wrestling dirt sheet!
