Frank Cho has been interviewed for the Ed The Sock channel, part of what it calls its War On Boobs series.
Last week they tackled the portrayal of the female form in video games, in their distinctive macho -rock-sock puppet fashion. This week? Comics, looking at the history of the portrayal of the female form in comic books and pulp fiction, culminating with an interview with Frank.
Frank has been in the news recently after drawing a series of cartoons parodying the infamous Milo Manara Spider-Woman cover. Specifically The Mary Sue website was up in arms.
Cho tells the channel,
I drew a silly little drawing off a pretty girl and I posted it on my website to show my fans and the next thing I know I'm getting flooded with messages from my fans saying I was being attacked by Mary Sue so that's when I first realised that something was up.
Mary Sue, the article itself was pretty vicious, basically saying that I'm a sexist pig, roughly.
I was actually amused by the intensity at the backlash from that small group.
So I basically drew another one telling them to have a sense of humour and lighten up.
At that point I admit I'm poking a bear because I want to see how far this train wreck was going
I never did anything out of spite, I did everything out of fun.
I am very highly amused by the reaction over nothing, To me the whole thing is not about sexism but for me is about censorship, and being outraged and trying to supress me is just plain and simple censorship
When asked "What's the difference between a pervert and an artist?"
I guess the income level.
Then, "at one point you were a pervert?"
Pretty much
And as to of if he thought people are confusing sexy and sexist.
At the Mary Sue website, yes.
About his own version of Ultron for Mighty Avengers…
No outrage at the time.
At which point, on request, Frank Cho shows his boobs, saying it felt liberating.
And a final message to The Mary Sue and its followers,
I think they should loosen up, relax, there's going to be plenty more drawings coming your way.
We – and Mary Sue – can't wait.
