Giving Avengers: Endgame Credit Where It's Due (Spoilers)

Avengers: Endgame has plenty of comic book credits towards the end. There's a big credit for Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Jim Starlin also gets called out for his special contribution – and makes a cameo sitting next to one of the directors in the group therapy session. And there's a batch of creator names of people who had something, anything, to do with the comic books referenced to make this movie.

And while Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz are noted for one very special moment, there's a missing name. That of Brett Breeding.

Brett Breeding is an American comic book artist who was mostly active in the industry in the 1980s and 1990s, primarily as an inker and is best known for his work on the DC Comics character Superman. He's known for inking and finishing the work of Ron Frenz and Dan Jurgens, and is credited as a co-creator of the Doomsday character, as well as Shadowdragon, Saviour, and Blaze and Satanus.

Bleeding Cool mentioned the moment in Avengers: Endgame when Captain America picks up Thor's hammer Mjolnir and throws it to Thor in battle. And how this seemed to reflect the scene in Thor #390. We noted that copies were selling at around $70 a few days ago. That has now rocketed further to $90.

But the artist of that scene, Ron Frenz, has got in touch to tell us where the idea actually came from. He tells Bleeding Cool

Simply put, if Brett hadn't suggested the possibility that of all the characters in the Marvel Universe, Steve should be the the one to challenge the enchantment, (which might seem obvious, but was never until that point suggested) Thor #390 would have played out very differently. Given the recent pop culture landscape I wanted to make sure that Brett gets the credit he's earned and deserves!

Fair enough, Ron, Thanks for getting in touch. We talked to Brett, who recalled the incident for Bleeding Cool.

Back when we were preparing for Thor #390, I had the idea that if anyone in the Marvel universe were "worthy" to lift Thor's hammer it should be Steve Rogers. I thought it would be great if during the big battle scene in 390 Steve Rogers, who in that issue was going as "The Captain" picked up the hammer during the fight. Ron thought it was a great idea too and passed it along to Tom Deface who also liked the idea and they worked it into the story.

As to seeing it in the cinema…

Going back to "Age of Ultron" I was delighted at the scene were Steve budges the hammer and Thor is visibly shaken. I expected it was just a fun scene that I didn't expect to go any further. Seeing "endgame" last week I was very surprised and thrilled to see what they did in the movie and cheered out loud, along with most of the people in the theater. I was at the Gem City Comic Con in Dayton, Ohio over the weekend and three people brought up the movie, all mentioning that bit and one saying it got the biggest reaction from the crowd in his theater. I will say, I was very disappointed to not see my name in the "thank you" credits.

Maybe we could get it changed for the DVD?

That would be nice. I'd be happy if I could just get Kevin Feige's email or address so I could write him about it. I'm aware of at least one person who keeps getting thanked in the Marvel credits for stuff they had absolutely nothing to with. Marvel needs to get better at addressing credit. It's very hard in this business, especially for inkers who contribute more than just inks, to get credit for the things they actually have contributed to creating without having people out there taking credit for things they did not do.
