IDW's Ted Adams Asks You To Help Low-Income Kids' Reading On #GivingTuesday
Ted Adams, Founder of IDW and Chief Executive Officer of IDW Media Holdings, writes for Bleeding Cool,
This is the only day of the year I wish I participated in social media.
I'm a board member of Traveling Stories, a San Diego based non-profit that helps low-income kids learn how to read and we're hoping to raise some money on this Giving Tuesday.
The way Traveling Stories works is kids come to our StoryTents and either independently read books or have books read to them. For each book they read, they get a book buck that can be used to buy toys. The more book bucks they earn, the better the toys they can buy. Kids can also take books home, read them independently, and bring them back to the StoryTents for more book bucks. Simple and effective.
I'm proud that we helped more than 6,000 children this year. Children in low-income households are 15 times more likely to drop out of school if they cannot read proficiently by the fourth grade. Sadly, in the U.S., 82% of disadvantaged children do not read at grade-level.
It only takes $51 to provide the StoryTent experience for three children for three months, which includes reading every week with volunteers, occasional field trips, and workshops with local authors.
We need to raise $50,000 by December 31st to continue providing the StoryTent experience to the children who've come to count on us. Will you consider making a tax-deductible donation to Traveling Stories today? By giving, you're joining a child in their fight against illiteracy and poverty.
If anyone is inclined to help out, the link to donate is here. I'll send anyone who donates at least $10 a copy of my comic, Diablo House. Just send an email to ted@idwpublishing.com and let me know the amount you donated and where you want the comic sent.
Thx, Ted.
