New Lieutenants of Metal #1 Review: Saving the World with Rock 'n' Roll

Steppenwulf is a metalhead warrior who has put himself away in a mental health ward to control his rage and anger. However, he has other places to be. The New Lieutenants of Metal free him from the institute, as well as the other metalheads within, to help in their battle against a pair of Monster Trucks that are wrecking the city. The New Lieutenants are the only ones who can save the city.

Obviously, New Lieutenants of Metal #1 is silly. It knows it's silly. Every line drips with affected coolness that is decades too old, and the concept itself is ridiculous.

It gets away with embracing the silly, and it does this in such an earnest manner that you can't help but get on board with this team of metal worshippers on a mission to save the world from monsters and bad music.

The characters are shallow, arguably except for Steppenwulf. That's okay, because the team has radical designs and a righteous taste in music. They have good intent and great music to back them on their adventure.

The ending stinger is an insane jab at pop music and boy bands that gave me a good chuckle too.

Also, I listened to Billy Joel while writing this. 'Downeaster Alexa', 'We Didn't Start the Fire', and 'Piano Man' in that order. Bathe in that irony.

Ulises Farinas brings an insane visual design that straddles the line between over-the-top and downright cute, and I'm not just talking about Spike the Panda. All the New Lieutenants of Metal have a weirdly cute design that would look amazing as a plushie. Melody Often keeps things bright and colorful to boot, and the final product is a visual shotgun blast of action, brightness, and cuteness.

New Lieutenants of Metal #1 is an insane premise that the world needs. It is a handful of diehard metal fans with superpowers and enough gumption to save the world. Is it a little wordy? Yeah. Will it change your life? Maybe, but probably not. In any case, I recommend it. Check it out.
