Quake Champions #4 Cancelled, Merged With #3 for February 2018 Release

Quake Champions, the comic book series by Ram V and Alan Quah and published by Titan Comics, has had its fourth and final issue cancelled. But not to worry for those comic book readers enjoying the series, which tells the prequel to the events of the upcoming video game — the contents of that final issue have been merged with the third issue. The two issues were intended to be published last October and November, the second issue was delayed until October, and now the combined issue completing the story will now be published on February 7th.

That does mean that the price of the third issue has been increased. But since it has jumped from $3.99 to $5.99, that represents a dollar in savings for the reader.

The game Quake Champions that the comic book intends to tie into is even later. Planned for 2017, the last we heard it was planned for February 2018 — which would be handy for the comic book. Could this announcement been seen as confirmation that the game will be out in February, as well?

Quake Champions is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks, as part of the Quake series of multiplayer shooters. The game will be the first main entry in the Quake series since 2005's Quake 4. The game is due for release on Microsoft Windows. Announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016, alongside a debut trailer, the game will feature a lot of playable characters, each boasting their own sets of unique skills. The game is promised to be a "fast-paced arena-based shooter". It will not be released on consoles due to hardware limitations.

At QuakeCon 2016, creative-director Tim Willits revealed that Quake Champions does not run on the id Tech 6 game engine, but instead works on a hybrid engine made up of id tech and Saber tech. This means a number of the features seen in Doom are not native to Quake Champions, such as virtual reality, Vulkan API, SnapMaps and mod support — although mod support is potentially planned after initial release. It was revealed that Quake Champions was originally considered as an expansion to Quake Live, a revamped version of Quake III Arena released in 2010. The game went into closed beta on April 6th, 2017 and was released onto Steam's early access program on August 23rd.

It is stated that the game would feature a free-to-play option, allowing players to play as Ranger, with additional characters available for purchase, similar to the model used in Killer Instinct. At E3 2017 it was announced that B.J. Blazkowicz of the Wolfenstein series would be a playable character. And in August, the Doom Slayer from the 2016 video game Doom was confirmed as a playable character, after previously appearing in 1999's Quake III Arena and 2010's Quake Live as Doomguy.
