Drunk Tony, Arno Stark and Robotic Revolution – A Look Ahead and Back For This Wednesday's Iron Man 2020 #1 (Spoilers)
Over in Venom, the great god Knull of the symbiotes is on his way to Earth. In Empyre we will see the invading armies of Kree and Skrull arrive on Earth. And in Iron Man 2020, we are getting The Extinction Entity arriving on Earth. You don't suppose, what with all that connective tissue going around, that someone might be persuaded to fight each other?
Bleeding Cool first ran the story that Iron Man 2020 was definitely coming over a year ago, and this week, after a lot of teasing in Tony Stark: Iron Man, it is finally with us. The series began to introduce more elements familiar from the Machine Man mini-series by Tom DeFalco, Herb Trimpe and Barry Windsor Smith that introduced Arno Stark, the Iron Man of 2020 in the first place. And Tony Stark Iron Man has been laying down the breadcrumbs.
The original Machine Man featured the elderly Sunset Bain of Bain Industries, the grand nephew of Tony Stark, Arno Stark – Iron Man 2020, and Jocasta all working together in a Blade Runner-style far-flung future of 2020.Since then Arno Stark was introduced as Tony Stark's adoptive brother Baintronics began opposing and rivalling Stark Industries. And Jocasta started running Stark's AI division, introducing sentient rights for artificial intelligences. And Tony Stark creating a familiar-looking armour using Baintronics technology.
Which he then deleted. Tony Stark: Iron Man concluded when Stark went public that he was not actually Tony Stark, that Tony Stark had died, and he was an artificial intelligence simulcrum of Stark, living in a cloned body.
While his adoptive brother, Arno Stark, working with Sunset Bain and Bain Electronics has brought back their parents in a similar fashion. Tony Stark was a broken man…
And we saw repercussions of these revelations.
Now dubbed the False Tony Stark, he lost everything. With Baintronics now owning Stark Industries.
And over in Incoming #1, Arno Stark is clear about what this means to him at least. Tony Stark is dead.
While Tony Stark: Iron Man #19 had Arno Stark looking to build that very familiar costume above.
And a plan to save all life on Earth…
Is that from whatever The Extinction Entity is? While Tony Stark was seeing the New Year in with a drink…
And Iron Man 2020 #1 suggests it's a downward path for Fake Tony.
Then of course there are the Artificial Rights movement, counter-movement and Robot Revolution, Tony Stark Iron Man #19 saw Machine Man getting an upgrade, or downgrade, courtesy of Ultron.
While rights for artificial lifeforms were being taken away…
And Machine Man calling for a robot revolution to reboot the system.., over in Incoming #1. Valerie Richards was rather inspired by this.
And set the Fantastic Four's enslaved robot HERBIE free.
Using the same language. However, there were deadlier repercussions in the same issue.
Iron Man 2020 #1 out this week will be picking up these strands and making them anew. Extinction Entity, Godbuster armor, robot revolution, Drunk Fake Tony and Arno's plans to save everyone… from something.
Iron Man 2020 #1 begins with a fight with the A.I. Army, the paramilitary wing of the robot revolution, with Machine Man as figureheads, and including a number of Life Model Decoys of the former Nick Fury. Who are collectively fed up of being decoys for assassins and the like. And what's a Nick Fury decoy to do now that he no longer looks like Nick Fury anyway?
And there to free enslaved Constructo-Bots working on a construction site,.
The party line in Iron Man 2020 is that Tony Stark is dead, it is just a simulacrum going around getting drunk, and has now gone missing. As War Machine and the revived Force Works fight the robot revolution around the world, Bain Electronics takes possession of the AI they own, EXE raid the Uncanny Valley, it's all down to the AI Army, the Robotic Revolution and a leader going by the name of Mark…
As to the original creators, Tom DeFalco will be writing spinoff books, Herb Trimpe passed away and Barry Windsor-Smith, who always has his own thing going on (sometimes his own Thing) is given the name of the Windsor-Smith Hospital during the storyline.
