Veronica Mars as a Masked Crimefighter? Who – Or What – is The Black Ghost?
Who – or what – is The Black Ghost?
One of the more intriguing titles coming out via Comixology Originals' September slate is The Black Ghost – described in PR-speak as a "superhero noir." That's all well and good, but what piqued my interest was the creative lineup of co-writers Alex Segura and Monica Gallagher, plus artist George Kambadais.
Most know Segura as co-president of Archie Comics and as a crime novelist, but this isn't his first collab with Gallagher, a writer/artist known for her action/comedy Webtoons strip, Assassin Roommate. The duo launched a podcast via iHeart Media called Lethal Lit that circles around the Veronica Mars and Twin Peaks headspace.
Kambadais mixes a Bruce Timm aesthetic with a modern flair for a new take on the classic superhero vigilante concept. The Black Ghost tells the story of flawed Crreighton reporter Lara Dominguez – who's bending all the rules to get that one, big scoop: the truth surrounding the city's lone vigilante, The Black Ghost. But if you read the first issue, you'll find a last page that leaves preconceptions scrambled.
The first issue of The Black Ghost is out now digitally from Comixology Originals. And they've just shown off Francesco Francavilla's cover for issue 2 out next month.
Here's a preview of the first issue:
