Would You Kill Hitler As A Kid? What About Snowden? It's An Avengers Standoff! (Spoilers)
Something slightly intriguing about Avengers Standoff: Alpha, compared to the Marvel Previews booklet in stores right now.
That line about Hillary Clinton. It has been removed in the Preview. Trying not to spook the horses?
Unfortunate because Avengers Standoff: Alpha #1 in stores today does little else. We have The Whisperer, the man who leaked all the secrets of the Kobik plan for SHIELD to rewrite reality as a security measure. And, just as Edward Showden and Chelsea Manning were revealed, so is he…
As Rick Jones importance to the Marvel Universe continues post Secret Wars. Of course he's going to be involved with all this cosmic cube shenanigans that seems to be rewriting and defining the very nature of the Marvel universe.
So, we know that Kobik was not shut down. Rick knows, now one of the Captain Americas knows…
And now so does the other. And one more reference to DeBlasio later, we see the idealised world that Maria Hill has created to contain supervillains by rewriting their own reality into being someone else.
So we have a government body doing a bad thing but to some bad people, constraining it to a few people. But Steve Rogers is an idealistic man, Maria Hill knows that the principle of the thing wouldn't fly in the face of the embodiment of the flag.
So in this moral maze, it's time to up the stakes… what if the Kobik cosmic cubes had become sentient as a little girl? A little human white girl?
Obviously Captain America would have a problem with that situation… but if Bucky was on his way to kill her…
Ladies and gentlemen, we have an Avengers Standoff! Principles be damned if it's a little girl's life that's at stake. against famed child murderer Bucky Barnes. And what a perfect dilemma to be in the comics as the Civil War movie is set to come out with its own split between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes.
I'm still not sure they've gone quite far enough though, the little girl personification of the cosmic cubes that Steve Rogers was demanding be seized and dismantled. Couldn't she have a sweet puppy dog as well?
Okay, possibly not.
Where Sam Wilson will stand is yet to be decided. We know it's a three-way – Wilson will also be very anti-cosmic cubes, but will he want to kill a kid like Bucky or save her like Steve? Will he have a very different solution that the other two hate as well?
