What If You Held A Signing But The Comics Weren't Sold in Your Country?

Orbital Comics in London currently has a new exhibition in its gallery space of the work of Rafael Albuquerque, specifically pages from A Study in Emerald, his new collaboration with Neil Gaiman, adapting a short story for the comic book medium, published by Dark Horse Comics.

The exhibition is running through the month of September, but on Wednesday, September 19th, just ahead of Thought Bubble in Leed, Rafael Albuquerque and Rafael Scavone will be in London signing copies of the comic in question and holding an after-hours talk.

There's just one problem and it only came to light after the exhibition and signing had been scheduled. Dark Horse Comics isn't selling A Study In Emerald in the UK. They don't have the rights. And Neil Gaiman's UK publishers who do have the rights aren't selling it here.

So Orbital Comics have the artwork on display, they will have its creator, but they didn't have any copies of the book to sell. Dark Horse wasn't allowed to sell them to Orbital.

So Orbital did what any self-respecting comic store does. They went onto Amazon and ordered them in bulk there. And Amazon doesn't seem to care about such license restrictions, it's called the grey market.

And Orbital will now be selling the copies for the price they paid to get them. So they won't make any money, but they will at least make an entertaining evening with Rafael Albuquerque and plenty of people getting their copies signed.
