The Todd McFarlane-Signed, Slabbed and Certified Spawn… That Wasn't
This video has been doing the rounds on Facebook, from comic book collector Josh Camfield. Who bought off eBay a CBCS graded, slabbed, signed-and-certified copy of a special black-and-white art edition of Spawn, one copy published and sent to every comic book store in the direct market. But, as he pointed out, Spawn creator and publisher Todd McFarlane had stated he wouldn't be signing any of these. So to find a signed-and-certified copy was a rarity.
There was just one problem. The signature that had been verified? It was a printed signature on the inside front page underneath the editorial by Todd.
Here's the video in full.
We approached CBCS for comment and Jeromy Murray, Vice President of Beckett Grading/Authentication & CBCS told Bleeding Cool,
'we were recently informed of this situation and are looking into it now. If a mistake was made on our end, we would love to get it resolved for the collector and for the community. We look forward to resolving this issue with the owner of the book in question. Have a great day!'
We will, Jeromy, we will. And you too.
Declaration of interest – Bleeding Cool is sponsored by CBCS rival CGC. This story was acquired independently of them, CGC was not consulted at any stage, and it would have run on Bleeding Cool whether we were sponsored by them or not.
