Take Your Medisin – Healthcare For Supervillains
When I was a kid, I always sort of felt bad for super villains. I mean, after they got pummeled by the super hero, where did they go for medical treatment? Super bad guys can't just walk into a hospital. They'd be arrested on sight. Clearly, super villains would need their own special brand of health care.
That's the premise for MEDISIN, my new six issue series (and possibly ongoing) published by Action Lab Danger Zone. The first issue lands in stores on May 3rd and you can now pre-order it at your local comic shop. I hope you will, because in this difficult market it's hard for a smaller book from an indie publisher to get noticed.
MEDISIN is all about that fine line between duty and ethics, between obligation and a personal moral code. While our story is filled with super villains, led by their vile commander Malady, it's really the team of blackmailed doctors who are the main characters. They struggle to uphold their oath to "First Do No Harm" as they doctor the worst of the worst.
My co-writer (and good friend) is Dr. Mark McKeon. At first, Mark was just there to help make sure the medical talk sounded legit. But he ended up being a key player on our creative team, helping to devise a detailed backstory for our main character Ethan Sharp, a gifted but deeply troubled physician.
The art on MEDISIN is by the extremely talented David Brame. This guy is going to be huge, and I'm thrilled he's our artistic partner. His gritty art is well suited for the dark world of MEDISIN. He can draw a surgical room as well as a super hero battle. His renditions of the doctors are especially spot on.
As pages came in, I was surprised by his visualization of Dr. Olivia Stribling. She's a woman struggling with her past, stepping over the line of doctor/patient and getting herself into some hot water along the way.
The team on MEDISIN is rounded out by colorist extraordinaire Joaquin Pereyra and letterer Adam Wollet. "First Do No Harm" is our initial six issue story arc, but we have plans to grow the world of MEDISIN if these first issues are well received.
