The A-Team Can't Answer The Phone, Leave A Message
Michael Sekigahama writes;
Imagine you're a cancer research scientist in Cambodia conducting groundbreaking research.
Everything was going well until someone began stealing your highly inbred mogwuis, an essential component to your research. You'd investigate this situation yourself but there are some test tubes that need to be taken out of the centrifuge back in the lab. What you need is a top notch team on the job, so you can focus, you're curing cancer for Pete's sake. You call the A-Team, it goes straight to voicemail. Damn. What to do? What to do? You pace back and forth in front of some mogwuis, quietly cooing but more so drooling in their cages, and then it hits you. B-SQUAD! You remember seeing a late night infomercial about them, they seemed very reasonably priced. As you reach for the phone, you think to yourself, what's the worst that could happen…
And so begins the first issue of B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune, written and created by Eben E.B. Burgoon, and illustrated by Lauren Monardo. Just in case the idea of cut rate mercenaries taking on the missions that the A-Team won't touch is not enough, I'll present you with an additional wrinkle. A twist, yes my pretties there is always a twist. Each issue will see the permanent and forever death of one B-Squad member. That's insane, you say. Nobody kills off a main character in each issue, no sane man anyways. Luckily for us, Eben is that fearless lunatic we've all been unknowingly dreaming of. But wait there's more wrinkles.
The doomed BSquader will not be chosen by a mere mortal man but by the simple spin of a die. That's right, not only will he kill off a member each issue, he'll leave it all up to chance, or fate if that's what you're into. While the squad starts with six members there are 36 waiting in the wings to take the place of their brave fallen comrades.
At this point you're either really into this idea or turned off by the fact that your favorite character may become worm food at the end of an issue. At any rate we hope you'll be sufficiently intrigued to check out our kickstarter page to learn more. Of course we want you to love the characters but we also want you to share in our excitement for this new story mechanic.
It's become all too common now to see our mighty heroes die only to be brought back or resurrected in some way or another, not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is a chance to see a story unfold where you know that won't happen. Perhaps the impermanence of it all will make you cherish your favorite moments all the more. Yes, it is very zen.
Starting August 1st, B-Squad will be coming to Kickstarter to raise the $3000 needed to fund the rest of Issue #1, and hopefully go far beyond to fund future issues through stretch goals and other excitement.
Simply backing for a $1 will get you access to viewing the first ten pages of B-Squad #1 – and from there, you can make the decision to increase and join us for the fun and excitement that will be B-Squad.
