After a long hiatus (and general silence about its progress) since its release in 2019, there hasn't been much information about a follow-up to the live-action Pokemon film Detective Pikachu. And other than its early confirmation that a sequel was in development, the last major announcement came in 2022 with the news that Portlandia and Baskets co-creator Jonathan Krisel was in talks to direct Detective Pikachu 2, along with The Kings of Summer scribe Chris Galletta attached to the sequel script, a notion that was later confirmed by a representative for Legendary Pictures.
Unfortunately, as of now, we're still not really sure where the film stands, along with one of the key players of the popular Pokemon project.
Detective Pikachu Star Still Hasn't Been Approached for the In-Development Sequel
When asked about the status of Detective Pikachu 2, the film's first leading actor, Justice Smith, recently shared that there wasn't necessarily a positive update for fans of the franchise. Smith tells Screen Rant, "I have not heard of any movement [on Detective Pikachu 2]. I mean, I know what was released online, but no one has called me. So I'm just waiting for that call."
The first film's official summary: The story begins when ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery.
Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
The first film was directed by Rob Letterman and stars Ryan Reynolds (as the voice of Pikachu), Smith, Kathryn Newton, Ken Watanabe, Khary Payton, Bill Nighy, Suki Waterhouse, Chris Geere, Rita Ora, and Omar Chaparro.
