It was not very long ago that The Super Mario Bros. Movie was dominating the box office and turning Mario into another genuine big-screen moment, even if the character never really went anywhere. The 2023 film finished its run at about $1.36 billion worldwide, which is the kind of number that makes a follow-up feel inevitable. Now the high-priority sequel is officially here. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially hit theaters this month, and it's scaling up the adventure quickly by sending Mario and company into space.

The biggest fan favorite addition is also the one the first movie teased on the way out. Yoshi is officially in the mix, and Donald Glover is voicing him. And recently, Glover also made it sound as if his casting began with him simply putting the idea out there.

Animated characters Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Peach are soaring through a colorful, cosmic backdrop filled with asteroids. The scene captures a sense of adventure and excitement.

Donald Glover Inquired About Voicing Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

In a Screen Rant interview, he said he "literally hit up [producer Chris Meledandri]" and told him, "I know y'all got to use Yoshi." When he was told the character would likely keep things simple and "keep it very traditional," he added, "I can be traditional." While switching things up can be a fun subversion for an adaptation (like Bowser), it's a good idea to keep it familiar. Yoshi is instantly recognizable, has been requested for years, and does not necessarily need a complicated intro to get cheers.

As for the story, the official setup leans into the game's Galaxy era, with Mario and Luigi meeting and befriending Yoshi before joining Princess Peach and Toad on an adventure across the galaxy. Along the way, they meet Rosalina and face Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr. That is a lot of Mario history to squeeze into one movie, but it is also the kind of movie that makes sense when you are trying to follow up a billion-dollar hit.

The core voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. The new additions include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Brie Larson as Rosalina, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as the Honey Queen, and Luis Guzmán as Wart, with Kevin Michael Richardson back as Kamek.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrived in theaters on April 1, 2026.
