Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee is launching her new comedy-thriller series How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, coming soon to Netflix.
Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has announced the cast for her upcoming Netflix comedy thriller How to Get to Heaven from Belfast. The cast includes Sinéad Keenan, who recently replaced Nicola Walker as the lead cop heroine in Unforgotten, Roísín Gallagher, and Caoilfhionn Dunne. McGee has reunited with her Derry Girls director, Michael Lennox, on the new series.
The story follows three childhood friends – TV writer Saoirse (Gallagher), mother of three Robyn (Keenan), and carer Dara (Dunne) – who are shocked to learn that Greta, the estranged fourth member of their group, has died. A series of eerie events at her wake sets them on a dark, dangerous, and hilarious odyssey through Ireland and beyond as each tries to piece together the truth of the past. Now, in their late thirties, they're leading starkly different lives when they each receive an email informing them of the death of an old classmate they were friends with, Greta.
But when the trio of friends decides to attend the wake, they soon find out that not everything is quite what it seems and, according to the synopsis, "find themselves embroiled in a dark and twisted mystery," leading to "an adventure that will take them from their native Belfast, a city full of ghosts, the pain of the past plastered on every mural, to the mythic wildness of rural Donegal and right across Ireland, as they attempt to put the pieces of the puzzle together and uncover the truth. Even if their own complicated, chaotic, and messy lives often get in the way". So you could say it was like Derry Girls all grown up – older, not wiser, and up to even crazier shenanigans. Nothing like a murder to spice things up.
"I couldn't be more excited to start production on How to Get to Heaven from Belfast. I've loved writing Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara – three flawed, funny women who are about to embark on the most thrilling and terrifying adventure of their lives. A mystery full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing and make you laugh out loud. Let's go girls!" McGee shared when news of the series was first announced.
Derry Girls is streaming on Netflix.
