Less than two weeks after news broke that RL Stine's "Goosebumps" series of books was being developed for a television return, it looks like Disney+ is looking to play nice with the author, too. The streaming service announced on Thursday that an eight-episode series based on Stine's "Just Beyond" graphic novels for BOOM! Studios has been ordered. Seth Grahame-Smith will write the horror-comedy anthology, and serve as executive producer alongside David Katzenberg through their KatzSmith Productions banner. Stephen Christy and Ross Richie are also set to executive produce, with Stine co-executive producing. 20th Century Fox Television will serve as the studio, with a writers' room currently being assembled for a Fall 2021 premiere.
For Grahame-Smith, the series affords him the opportunity to create an anthology series similar to the ones that influenced him growing up: "I grew up watching 'Twilight Zone' reruns and the original 'Amazing Stories' with my parents. I've always wanted to make a genre anthology series that families could enjoy together, and do it in a way that delivered for kids and adults alike. R.L. Stine has been a part of millions of childhoods, and Disney Plus has already proven itself as a place that knows how to make high-quality shows for the whole family. I couldn't be more excited to be working with both of them."
Stine reminds everyone that this isn't his first time dancing with Disney, and expresses his joy at writing the graphic novels for BOOM! Studios and the series' creative potential: "Back in the day, we had a Goosebumps HorrorLand attraction at Walt Disney World. It was one of the thrills of my life. Now I'm thrilled to be back with Disney for the TV series based on my graphic novels. Writing "Just Beyond" for BOOM! Studios has been a joy from the beginning, and I'm so happy to have the wonderful screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith bring the series to life on Disney Plus. How lucky can I be?"
