Suits Renewed for Season 8: Adams and Markle are Out, Heigl is In
The USA Network's legal drama Suits has been in the news a lot of late because of actress Meghan Markle and her recent engagement to England's Prince Harry. Yesterday came word that the series would be returning for an eighth season, but Markle and Patrick J. Adams would not be returning.
It was no surprise Markle would be moving on to focus on her new duties as part of the royal family, but Adams's departure was a bit of a surprise, as both have been with the series from the very beginning. Today the network has announced that Katherine Heigl would be joining as a series regular in the new season.
The series was originally based on the concept of a slacker/pothead with a photographic memory named Mike (Adams) who makes money by taking the bar exam for people. He gets hired on as a first year lawyer by Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), mainly to cause problems and shake things up. Markle played a paralegal/love interest named Rachel for Mike. Now, as the seventh season comes to an end, Mike is on the verge of becoming a legitimate lawyer and is engaged to Rachel. Adams said he felt that Mike's story has concluded and it was time to move on.
Heigl will join the series as Samantha Wheeler, a talented new partner at the firm who challenges the status quo and will become the firms greatest ally or most powerful enemy. She's basically the new Harvey. She previously starred in ABC's Grey's Anatomy, the short-lived Doubt, and NBC's one-season CIA drama State of Affairs.
The series also stars Rick Hoffman, Sarah Rafferty, and Dulé Hill.
Suits returns March 28th at 9 p.m. ET on USA Network.
