'The Good Fight': CBS All Access Issues Statement Clarifying Trump Tweet Matter [UPDATE]

In light of some unwanted attention over the weekend garnered by a questionable tweet sent out by CBS All Access The Good Fight's account on Friday (see below) where a series of President Donald Trump-related "target words" were on display, the streaming service released an official statement on the matter:

"A social media post for "The Good Fight" displayed show content that, when presented in isolation, outside of the context of the show, created an impression and provoked a reaction that was not intended.

The tweet showed a screengrab from the show's fictional NSA office, including a list of standalone "target words" the series' NSA characters should look out for while conducting anonymous wire taps in an effort to protect the President and the public. However, the tweet was regrettably posted without that context, in an effort to direct fans to find an "Easter Egg" clue, in reference to a past character on "The Good Wife," Kalinda, listed in the second column of the list, and the fact that the NSA is still monitoring her in the fictional world of the show.

The post was perceived very differently than the intended result and has since been removed."

For some context, the March 28th episode "The One Where Diane Joins The Resistance" involved Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart joining a female resistance group commited to driving down Trump's approval ratings. At one point, Diane's phone contacts with the group were intercepted by NSA analysts Stephen (Michael Urie) and Dev (Maulik Pancholy) – two fan favorites from original series The Good Wife.

As the analysts go over the list of target words, observers missed the "easter egg" intended for fans of The Good Wife: that beloved character Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) was still on the case – and still under NSA's watchful eyes.

Needless to say, quite a few Twitter users – on both sides of the political aisle – missed the intended "easter egg" reference to The Good Wife, and the tweet was deleted (though Deadline Hollywood saved an image). While the name "Kalinda" is clear in the second column, the words "Assassinate President Trump" and "Eliminate Mar-a-Lago" in the first and second columns are also clear in the image – causing some serious confusion.

happy season 2

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in January 2019, Robert King descibed the series as being more of a "satire" of Democrats' reactions to Trump's administration:

"The Democrats are licking their chops at the possibility of turning the House over and impeachment. So it's really a satire of Democrats wanting to impeach a sitting president in a way that would make them angry if it were Republicans going after Obama … There's a lot of argument among them — especially because Michael Boatman's character is very much a Trump supporter. We wanted to see what the debate would be…"

The Good Fight s03e03 "The One Where Diane Joins The Resistance": As the world appears to spin out of control, Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) starts to lose hope–until she finds a group of other like-minded women who refuse to play by the rules. Will Liz Reddick-Lawrence (Audra McDonald) join the fight, too?

The world went crazy in the THE GOOD FIGHT's second season, and now, in season three, the resistance does. Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) tries to figure out whether you can resist a crazy administration without going crazy yourself, while Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo) and Liz Reddick-Lawrence (Audra McDonald) struggle with a new post-factual world where the lawyer who tells the best story triumphs over the lawyer with the best facts. Meanwhile, Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) balances a new baby with a new love, and Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) finds a new Mephistopheles in Roland Blum (Michael Sheen), a lawyer who is corruption incarnate.
