Article Summary
- Noah Wyle shares advice received from Alan Alda during his time on the set of ER
- Alda encouraged ER cast to closely review and critique their performances for growth
- The "gut check" tradition from M*A*S*H inspired Wyle to focus on natural, continuous movement
- Wyle credits this advice for helping his acting evolve, now leading The Pitt in 2026
The Pitt actor and ER alum Noah Wyle revealed the advice the NBC medical drama cast received from fellow actor Alan Alda. Wyle explained in a previous interview with The New York Times that Alda (having worked on his own medical comedy/drama series as Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce in all 11 seasons of the CBS show M*A*S*H), encouraged the cast to take a closer look at all the episodes when they were finished and aired. Alda apparently gave the advice to the crew during his five-episode stint on ER, where he played Dr. Gabriel Lawrence in Season Six.

The Pitt's Noah Wyle learned To Examine His Performance While on ER
According to Wyle, "Alan Alda told us about something they had done on M*A*S*H. They called it a gut check. […]Every Wednesday or Thursday, the cast would have lunch in [executive producer] John Wells' office to screen that week's episode. […] Everyone took everyone else on. It could really get cruel if you hammed it up or took a moment to move your neck muscles or something. […] You were never supposed to stop moving until you earned the moment. I didn't ever want it to be me. I was moving around like an alley cat."

Wyle explained that examining his acting and taking notes from fellow cast members led him to incorporate more consistent movement in his scenes, rather than remaining stationary. He was able to take in a deeper analysis of his own work and his fellow castmates' performances, so everyone could improve their performances in the long run. While we can't personally vouch for anything The Pitt is currently doing off-camera, it seems some of that advice has paid off over the years, as Wyle leads the charge on one of the most popular shows in 2026.
