Tom King Is Planning To Stay On Batman For 100 Issues

Tom King has been talking to Slate about his career in comics, moving from the CIA to becoming a writer. I'm listening to the interview as I'm working today and a few stories of note seem to be popping out.

Slate's Jacob Brogan has summarised the interview for his Slate audience, but there are a few factoids he skipped that may be more of interest to his comic book audience than to the general audience.

Such as Tom saying that he wants to write Batman for 100 issues, that's what he's got planned out to write. In comparison, Scott Snyder wrote the book for around 50 issues, with some spin-offs here and there. Tom King wants to double that.

Of course, because it's coming out twice a month, it will take around the same time — and of course, even after that hundred issues, King is aware of the temporary nature of what he writes for the character. From the interview:

Describing how he thinks about writing, King observes, "All stories are just stories of a character changing." And yet, where Batman is concerned, you can only ever change so much, partly because the assignment of writing his adventures is surprisingly intimidating. As a more established writer told King early on, virtually every Batman story imaginable has been told at some point in the character's history, and more will be told down the line. "The best lesson to learn in comics, and probably any serialized medium," King says he eventually realized, "is that the next guy who gets it is going to erase everything you did."
