Amazing Spider-Man #1 Beats LootCrate In Best Selling Comics Of 2014
Amazing Spider-Man #1 was only given away in Nerd Block (40-50,000 subscribers) while Rocket Raccoon and Walking Dead were in Loot Crate (250-300,000 subscribers) but it managed to get more elsewhere to pip them both to the top of Best Selling Comic Book of 2014 – in the comic book direct market via Diamond Comic Distributors that is, knocking Walking Dead off the perch of 2013.. Marvel dominates the top ten for comics, with only Image's Walking Dead breaking their perfect score for the year, with Death Of Wolverine taking four places to itself. But for trade papebacks, Marvel place none in the top ten, with nine for Image, made up of Walking Dead, Saga and Sex Criminals and one for DC with Batman.
Marvel beat DC Comics for marketshare, Marvel increasing their financal marketshare year on year from 33.50% to 34.38% in terms of dollars but in actual number of comics sold, fell from 36.97% to 36.78%. While DC Comics dropped from 30.33% to 28.86% in terms of dollars but in actual number of comics sold, fell from 33.35%% to 32.47%.
So where did the marketshare go? Well, Image Comics saw their retail marketshare rise from 8.00% to 9.23% and their unit marketshare rise from 8.49% to 10.41%, that's practically a fifth rise in sales from year to year. IDW and Dark Horse have also fallen slightly, but much of their sales is now occuring outside the comics direct market.
The only comic publishers apart from Image on the list to see a rise in both dollars and comics sold marketshare are Boom, with dollars rising from 1.99% to 2.23% and sales rising from 1.92% to 2.41%. And Bleeding Cool's publisher Avatar Press, with dollars rising from 0.89% to 2.16% and sales rising from 0.74% to 0.83%.
