Archie Comics Launches Super Duck – For Adults – in March 2020 Solicitations
If you can't publish Darkwing Duck, Donald Duck, Daffy Duck or Howard The Duck, don't worry. Just do your own version, for grown-ups. Ian Flynn, formerly of Archie's Sonic The Hedgehog comics, and Frank Tieri, known for writing the more violent superhero comics at Marvel, have teamed up with artists Ryan Jampole, Matt Herms, Jack Morelli to create Super Duck. Apparently he's the greatest hero of Ducktropolis, but has fallen on hard times, relying on appearance fees and resorted to being the bodyguard to a Batman analogue…
Suer Duck was originally created in 1943 for what was then MLJ Comics (now Archie Comics) by staff artist Al Fagaly. As his name implies, Super Duck (nicknamed "Supe") was originally a parody of Superman, even down to a red and blue costume. But his time as a superhero was short, and by late 1944 his stories became more conventional, in the Disney/Carl Barks mode, running from 1944 to 1960, for 60 issues . But now it seems he is getting quite the reinvention.
Here's the solicitation, and all the comics that Archie is putting out in March 2020.
SUPER DUCK #1 (of 5)
BRAND NEW SERIES! Super Duck is the greatest hero of Ducktropolis. Brash, arrogant and virtually unbeatable, he's defeated all threats to the city and routinely foils the schemes of his greatest rival, criminal genius and corporate billionaire Dapper Duck. But now, three years later, Super Duck has fallen on hard times. Down on his luck and with his superheroing days a distant memory, he is reduced to appearing at comic conventions for measly appearance fees. So when he's approached by a rival of Dapper to be his personal bodyguard/accompany him on his many adventures, Supe has to decide if he's ready to don his cape once more in this series for mature readers!
