Is Avengers: No Surrender a Flipped Version of Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars? (Avengers #676 Spoilers)
Gladiator and the Imperial Legion of the Shi'ar Empire created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum as a homage to DC Comics' Legion of Super-Heroes, with all the Imperial Guard's original members created as analogues of Legionnaires.
Of late, DC Comics has been teasing the idea of bringing back the Legion of Super-Heroes to the DC Rebirth reality, though with Geoff Johns busying himself with Doomsday Clock, who knows when he — or Tom King — will get around to it?
So instead, in today's Avengers #676, co-written by a Mark Waid who would love to write Legion of Super-Heroes or DC Comics if Dan DiDio wasn't co-publisher of it, he looks like he's having another go. With the Lethal Legion, a team opposing the new Black Order, with some powerful force arranging for them to fight on the planet of Earth — almost like a kind of reverse eighties Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars. Remember that?
Back in the day, the Beyonder arranged two separate teams from Earth, basically the super-heroes and super-villains…
,…to fight each other on what was dubbed the patchwork planet, a planet made up of lots of other worlds. That was basically it.
Now we have a mysterious omnipotent-ish force arranging for two teams of cosmic beings, who could roughly be sorted into the "goodies" and the "baddies"…
…to fight each other on Earth. But only when he says so.
So you have the Lethal Legion against the new Black Order. New characters, old characters, revived and relaunched characters, with a handy-dandy guide at the back to who is who…
The Metal Master first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #6, then in about four other issues in the last fifty-odd years until his recent revival in Black Bolt.
And a planet that has been stolen and placed somewhere else for everyone to fight on. Earth may not be a patchwork planet – but it might be when this lot have finished with it!
