Booze Geek: Blitzkrieg Hops And The Ramones
Beer: Blitzkrieg Hops Double IPA
Brewery: Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co.
My mother grew up during the New York punk rock and hardcore, eventually moving out of New Jersey and residing in the city for quite a while. She experienced quite a number of shows and has regaled with me numerous ones (one of my favorites being the time she stole some pizzas with the Beastie Boys and dished them out to homeless people). However, the fact that she saw the Ramones play 17 times in one month…that must stand as a record somewhere.
Which is why I am thankful for her keen eye when spied the Blitzkrieg Hops at one of our local liquor stores. I knew I had to give it a go.
Blitzkrieg Hops was a darker amber color and produced a thick, long lasting soapy head. It gave off the scents of yeast and hops, with some sweet bread and fruit as well. I could not see any strongly active carbonation.
When I gave it a drink, I was surprised that the scents did not reciprocate with the taste. There was not much of a yeasty flavor, but rather it was very bitter and tart, much like grapefruit. There were plenty of hops present and even a slight creaminess. However, on the palate, the strong bitter and sourness made it a bit of chore to put back.
Overall, Blitzkrieg Hops was a decent IPA. It certainly smelled great, but the intense bitterness took away some of the enjoyment.
What to Drink This To:
Since it is right there in the name, Blitzkrieg Hops would best be enjoyed while blasting some classic Ramones tunes. It is hard to pin down a favorite of mine (going with "Blitzkrieg Bop" seems obvious), but one of my personal picks would have to be "Pet Cemetery." I always loved how the Ramones transitioned into a mainstream style but still maintaining their signature sound. Or, if you are feeling a little adventurous, pop in the cult classic Rock 'N Roll High School, a film I greatly enjoy for its absurdity and the Ramones' hilariously stilted performances.
Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world. He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
