From Brian Patten to Alan Moore to Scott Snyder and Jason Aaron…
This is the original version of Brian Patten's poem Where Are You Now, Batman? as published in The Mersey Sound in 1967.
It has been revised significantly since by the author over the years. But this poetical description of what were then seen as the lowliest forms of pop culture is considered an influential take on how Alan Moore would later sometimes write about superheroes. Moore stated: "It made you think, 'Ah! If only they'd look at those characters with a bit of poetry in the comics themselves!' I think that's where my attitude came from" with a scene from five issues into his Swamp Thing run, The Saga of Swamp Thing #24 being a prime contender.
Recently that kind of narrative seemed to be picked up by Scott Snyder over in Justice League, for a new place where the over-people gather.
And just as we discovered that today's Justice League and Avengers were telling the same story, so Jason Aaron seems to be using the same kind of narrative…
