Convention Horror Stories at ECCC with Jim Zub and Katie Cook

Convention Horror Stories, an ECCC Tradition, came back once more for its ninth annual edition. Hosted by writer/artists Jim Zub and Katie Cook, the panel consisted of the two swapping war stories about their years spent as pros working comic book conventions.

This was the first Convention Horror Stories I'd been able to catch, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Absolutely hilarious. The poor sign language interpreters, though. They tried their damnedest not to laugh, but it was a futile gesture; they kept having to swap out as the stories went on.

Here's the full audio of the panel, apologies in advance for the potato quality. If you hear a breathy, wheezy laugh-sob, ignore it. That's just me trying not to bust a gut laughing.

Audio's segmented into 10 parts. I tried to keep the gap time as short as possible, but there is a few seconds of delay from one to the next. Here's a rough idea of what's being said and when:

Part 1:                 Introduction, Katie's first meeting with Jeff Smith

Part 2:                 Zub's R.A. Salvatore mob story, and a creepy fan story

Part 3:                 Katie: "Dead babies everywhere." It gets worse from there

Part 4:                 Zub and Katie on crossing the border to go to conventions

Part 5:                 Katie's dad's business advice

Part 6:                 Zub on Udon, nihilistic epiphanies, traveling with parents

Part 7:                 Zub and his folks go to Africa

Part 8:                 Katie's parents at cons, geriatric fans, Facebook headshots, creepy sports card guy, exes,                                David Tennent's probable death, and bananas

Part 9:                 Zub and the miracle that is Tony Robbins

Part 10:               Feel-good stories to wrap it up; Katie and the fan engagement, Zub and FF 243 ('nuff                                      said)

Judd once put a light bulb in a microwave to see if it would glow, and it was really cool. No. that's a lie. He read about someone else doing it, and he's always wished he'd come up with the idea.
