Now we do the thing that David Gabriel hates the most. We divide the marketshare by the number of titles published, to work out their average marketshare per title. Then multiplied by a hundred for comparison sake. And a lot changes. First, retail marketshare, the amount of dollars brought in, divided by titles published.
PUBLISHER | COMICS | TOTAL |
DC COMICS | 422 | 360 |
MARVEL | 331 | 240 |

DC is even further in front of Marvel. Archie and Valiant would probably have been here but their marketshare is below the charts. We'll get to them later. IDW is now below Dark Horse, Oni is above Titan who, along with Dynamite, are way down.
And Unit marketshare, basically how much marketshare per title based on how many actual copies were sold regardless of price, tells a similar story, though Valiant places higher than Dark Horse, and Archie Comics beats Dynamite.
PUBLISHER | COMICS | TOTAL |
DC COMICS | 595 | 409 |
MARVEL | 345 | 250 |
IMAGE | 149 | 121 |
VALIANT | 88 | 80 |
DARK HORSE | 88 | 54 |
IDW | 67 | 42 |
BOOM | 71 | 52 |
ARCHIE COMICS | 53 | 45 |
DYNAMITE | 52 | 41 |
Why does this chart matter? It can measure the health of a publisher overall, and how well they sell their comics to the direct market. And for creators, give a better idea of where their comic book might actually sell better…
Septembers number's drop tomorrow. I wouldn't expect the tanker to turn round quite yet.
