Dynamite Focuses On Story With Cornell, Percy, Chu And Mona

By Octavio Karbank

Perhaps one of the more intimate comic book-related panels to be featured this year at New York Comic Con was Dynamite Comics' panel. Keith Davidson, Dynamite's marketing director, introduced writers Paul Cornell, Benjamin Percy, Amy Chu, and Erik Mona from Paizo Publishing onto the panel. The writers discussed their latest work and what they had in store for their upcoming stories.

20161006_194609Paul Cornell discussed his upcoming Vampirella:
– He emphasized that comic won't be a reboot and continues with everything that Vampirella already is.
– The story will feature Vampirella waking up in a far-flung future in a dystopic world. Though she'll have no memory as to how she got there, and attempts to do everything to get back to the present time, she will be forced to go head-to-head with this future and the evil powers that be.
– Vampirella won't be wearing her classic red bathing suit, but will wear something more practical.

Benjamin Percy on his upcoming work on the James Bond comic line:
– Taking up after Warren Ellis, Percy, having grown up on the famous secret agent, is thrilled to be working on the book.
– Mentioning only a little bit of what he has in store for the book, like the name of a new Bond villain, "No Name," Mr. Percy focused more on discussing his own feelings toward the character, offering insight in Bond himself.
– While the tone of his story will be dark, it won't be as dark as the Timothy Dalton era of Bond.
– Mr. Percy pointed out through discussion that he feels James Bond is importantly cold; he's shut himself off emotionally on account of all the horrible things he's seen and experienced.

Amy Chu talked about working on Kiss and Red Sonja:
– With the new Kiss comic, you don't have to be a Kiss fan. It's a straight-up sci-fi adventure about four kids discovering an underground world, a dystopia of sorts. Kiss is now a legend, akin to old gods, who teach them to rebel against society. It's kind of like Logan's Run.
– With Red Sonja, there's no need to over-intellectualize it. Basically, it's about taking her back to her roots. She's a warrior, she's found a new world, and has plenty of people to kill in it.

Finally, Erik Mona talked his Pathfinder Worldscape comic:
– It'll be six issues and will start on October 19th.
– The story features four Pathfinder adventurers who get transported to Worldscape and meet other Dynamite heroes like John Carter of Mars and Red Sonja. Of course, there are battles aplenty.
– The story delves into heroism and what it means to be a hero.
– Every issue has got Pathfinder RPG statistics.

While there might not have been any large or breaking news to emerge out of this particular panel, it was still worth it, if only to hear these writers talking about the characters they were working on. You could sense their passion; if you were interested at all about the craft of writing, this was also a panel that would've been worth attending. Long story short, Dynamite has done some terrific work over the years and looks like they'll continue the trend for a while yet!
