Extended Preview of Axis & Atlas #1, the New Titan Comic That's "a Cross Between Asterix and Bone"
Axis & Atlas #1 by Pau, from Titan Comics' Statix imprint and debuting in English in January, is up for Final Order Cut-Off on Monday. Described as "Asterix meets Bone", it's one of those see-it-to-believe-it books.
So, here, courtesy of Titan Comics is an extended preview of the first issue. And a handy-dandy quote from Stan Sakai:
"I have been a fan of Pau's Atlas and Axis for years, collecting the French editions–a language I neither read or understand. Pau's cartooning and clear storytelling transcends such barriers. But now, thanks to Titan Comics, I can enjoy this wonderful series completely."
Atlas & Axis is a series of adventure stories created by Spaniard cartoonist Pau, running since 2010, which features two anthropomorphic dogs. One of the peculiarities of the saga is that its protagonists, despite talking and marching on the hind legs, do not cease to be dogs and act as such, smelling traces, gnawing bones, publically urinating , sleeping in a ball and chasing sheep.
Stories include searching for the survivors of their attacked town, finding the missing link between wolf and dog to put an end to the arguments between creationists and evolutionists and going in search of the legendary bone-satiating Khimera…
The art, cartoony, dynamic with bold colours suggests a children's title, but the tone of the story is older, sometimes stark and cruel, but always maintaining a very particular sense of humour.
It has made the Angoulême Official Selection — and now in January, English-speakers can understand what all the fuss is about.
