Guardians of the Galaxy was Cancelled and Remade Due to Low Sales

Earlier in the year, Guardians of the Galaxy #151 was cancelled. Bleeding Cool was first to mention it, but writer Gerry Duggan was on hand to assure people.

The storyline was then reissued as Infinity Countdown#1: Adam Warlock for the following month, with the same writer and storyline but artist Michael Allred suddenly replacing Aaron Kuder.

Then the five issue series taking on Aaron Kuder's storyline…

Well, the kind of Marvel gossip that has been reaching me quite a bit today tells me that the reason the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book was cancelled was lower than expected sales. Duggan's pitch was accepted as a way to turn that around, but needed a new series for those stories. Hence Infinity Countdown!

Guardians of the Galaxy was Cancelled and Remade Due to Low Sales

That there was always meant to be an Infinity tie-in book, but that Guardians was meant to continue alongside. Internally covers with trade dress had been prepared for Guardians of the Galaxy #151 all the way to #155. And then Duggan pitched this rescue package…

Maybe it may benefit from a new #1 that follows and maybe the Guardians appearance in Avengers: Infinity War may help? It would be embarrassing at Marvel to have success with these characters in movie form, but not in the comic books that once inspired them…
