How One Comic Store Dealt With One Of The Industry's Bigger Weeks…
Big Bang Comics in Dublin is one of the better comic shops in the world.
Every week they go through the numbers online, talking about what sold that week, what did, and offering analysis.
They are only one store. But in a week like this, how did everyone do?
HUGE week to talk about. Not only did we see the beginning of DC REBIRTH but also Captain America breaking the internet! It was all go!

not much will change that. Until they bring Ben Reilly back, of course.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
BACK TO THE FUTURE #8, selling pre-orders only, no movement from the shelf. You'd think such a property would attract more heat, but…
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
BATGIRL #52 was the goodbye of the Batgirl of Burnside, one of our favourite books of the last couple of years. The book wasn't (cont)
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE was undoubtedly a hit and a game changer and it's something we hope people acknowledge and respect for a long time!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
No, mini-series would have sold a lot less. That's why Marvel is stealthily attaching these to the main book. https://t.co/AOzwXrZYXo
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
New #1s always bring new readers, so we saw that recently but ASM is seeing some of its worse sales with us recently https://t.co/rNzk1eCmC7
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016

— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
HEARTTHROB #2, 60% first week. Harder sale with no variant cover homaging Fleetwood Mac!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
It's a GREAT magazine and delighted people are picking it up!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
But hey, we get it. No one pays for the Ikea catalog or the Argos catalog, so…
¯_(ツ)_/¯— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
We pull IMAGE PLUS for some WALKING DEAD subscribers due to the Negan story but that's it, everything else is from shelf.

JOYRIDE #2, 80% first week.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
but it took a while to keep going on week of release. The fact that THOSE other two book stole all the buzz didn't help.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Very similar numbers and a bit of an overlap of customers. But JOHNNY RED has more traction with the nostalgia crowd https://t.co/rmeGA7cjVV
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016

— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Is MONSTRESS over with #6? Good performer overall! It took BALLS to do a triple sized issue for #1 but it absolutely paid off with us!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016

— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Yeah, PREVIEWS #333 JUNE 2016 is actually selling less than what it used to since IMAGE PLUS came out. Go figure.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
ROCK & ROLL BIOGRAPHIES IRON MAIDEN came out this week. We sold a third of it but don't care, they will keep selling, IT'S IRON MAIDEN!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Remember last week when FUTURE QUEST sold out and we said we were curious to see how SCOOBY APOCALYPSE #1 would do?
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
SCOOBY APOCALYPSE #1, sell out on all covers except the Fred one!
(did Fred ever have fans?)— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016

(worth noticing that #1 was a _5th_ printing. Ka-ching!)
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
SUPERMAN #52 was a hype book with that thing you know happening and suddenly everyone wanted to buy SUPERMAN. Sold out in no time.

(same thing for SUPERMAN LOIS AND CLARK #8, actually)

— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
True! But previous DREDD series saw walk-in interest, this one not so much. How fickle are people… https://t.co/qTq59kyPvU
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
So, shall we talk about THOSE books now?
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
It was one of those we ordered thinking of sales in a month as opposed to sales in the first week. But pre-orders started rolling in (cont)
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
We sold 80% of our order in the first week. But of that, only 16% were pre-orders! Soooo, what happened there?
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
(it's a rhetorical question, btw)
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
A few were complaining that Marvel were only doing it for the money WHILE LITERALLY HANDING US MONEY FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA STEVE ROGERS #1!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
CAP did great for us. We sold a lot more than what we expected to sell in the first week. THANK YOU TWITTER AND FACEBOOK AND NICK SPENCER!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Funny thing was… there weren't that many new customers for Cap. It was mostly the usual faces. But REBIRTH…
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
DC UNIVERSE REBIRTH #1 sold 97% of its order in the first week. The demand for it was ridiculous. We shipped copies to France and Spain.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
There were regular customers picking it up, lapsed readers picking it up, Marvel only fans picking it up AND people just walking in for it.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
(and hey, let's see how many people interested in CIVIL WAR II are going to see the 5.99 price tag and go… ) pic.twitter.com/TQPeOArfsc
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
And the best thing was, we had people coming back the next day to put down their name for a lot of the Rebirth one-shots!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
The New 52 had a strong start that fizzled quite fast for a lot of titles. We have to hope that DC editorial learned their lesson with that.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
A stronger DC makes for a stronger industry. A stronger DC will give Marvel more reasons to keep trying and looking for the next big thing.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
A stronger DC will create more talent that will inevitable go to Image and blow up in their own books. EVERYONE WINS!
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Are we optimistic? Yes. We surveyed our customers for Rebirth pre-orders and numbers were through the roof.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
We are going to sell A LOT of DC Rebirth. But it''s up to editorial and the talent to make sure that it's not a flash in the pan.
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
Retailers are all in for this. Readers are all in for this. Time to deliver, DC. _No pressure_
— Big Bang Comics (@TheBigBang_) May 30, 2016
