John Nee is the New Publisher of Marvel Comics
This weekend we told you that we were expecting a big move and a big hire at Marvel Comics. This is it.
Dan Buckley used to be Publisher of Marvel Entertainment. He is now President of Marvel Entertainment.
And John Nee is Marvel's big hire as the new Publisher of Marvel Entertainment. Comic Book got the word.
Nee is a comic book veteran, working for Wildstorm, becoming its President, then as a Senior Vice President for Warner Bros. when Wildstorm were bought out by DC Comics. After working on their CMX manga line, he worked elsewhere in Warner Bros., including their theme parks. He then moved to CEO of startup Cryptozoic, creating tabletop games based on existing IP, while still writing projects such as The Mixtionary for IDW and the like. The email has Buckley telling staff:
"This was more of the right time than the "best." Our comics and prose businesses have many opportunities in front of them, and each of those opportunities require a certain amount of expertise. We feel John can provide us with that expertise for each of these opportunities… John's has a comprehensive background that makes uniquely qualified for this role. He has a depth and breadth of experience in gaming, consumer products, prose publishing, collectibles, and most importantly comics… As the publisher, John will lead our business strategy for publishing as a whole and focus on growing the comics and prose business. All business aspects of publishing report up to John. Creative and editorial planning will still have oversight from C.B. Cebulski, Joe Quesada, and myself."
In 2010, Nee moved into the tabletop gaming, trading cards, and collectibles industry when he then co-founded and became CEO of Cryptozoic Entertainment. But comic books have always been in his blood.
On personal note, I have a lot of time for John Nee and have always found him a reliable, stand-up guy with all sorts of resources, contacts, and ideas at his disposal. I always tipped him for the top at DC Comics — it seems he had to go elsewhere for that role.
