Long Lost Era Of Excitement Is About To Return

Marvlettemp092205Andrew Huerta writes,

I miss the 90s era of comics and I don't mean the hologram or platinum covers or women with breasts so large and waists so thin you wonder how they could throw a punch. I'm talking about a time where artists were as big or bigger than the writers. Where the passion of creativity could be felt with every turn and they left you wanting more. The art was stylized, the storytelling was dynamic and the worlds were high concept.

It was a time where imagination had no boundaries and hell the sky wasn't just the limit, we busted through that glass ceiling and delivered what film, television and video games only wished they could. I'm talking about when comics were cooler than the movies they were based on. Where the Maxx, Hellboy, Guyver, Akira, Crimson, Battle Angel Alita, Battle Chasers and so much more roamed the comic book landscape. This was my 90s. These were my comics.

And that's what I am looking to bring back. Something so pure, so honest, so exciting that it could only ever be done as a comic book. That when reading it you scream this is why comics were created, this is what others in the film and video game industries could only hope to achieve. We have a language all our own and it's time to bring that back. Now I know this is going to sound crazy but I would love to be the next Jack Kirby. I mean no one could truly be the next Jack Kirby but when you think of Kirby you think of all the excitement and possibilities of what comics are and can still be. And who better to strive for than the King himself?

But before I get into more of why you should pledge your hard-earned money on my Kickstarter let me tell you a bit about my comic Sovereign.

Marvlettemp092205

On the planet EÅ in the year 2516 M.E. (Machine Era). A post-apocalyptic future where advanced sentient machines known as The Grey, have laid waste to most of humanity and are draining the planet of its eon-energy.

Years ago, during "The Last War", the conflict between man and machine caused the accidental destruction of the moon. Humans lost. And the machines grafted the moon to the Earth to save themselves, and in the process, created their own machine "planet". Ecologies have been altered and mutated. The remaining humans live in massive metric Cities counting down the days as the planet is sucked out of its essence. But Eå resurrects its champion, the ultimate elemental being…Sovereign.

He assembles what resistance remains and scours the earth of The Grey and their creator.

And that, in a nutshell, is the story I want to bring to you.

My name is Andrew Huerta and I am the creator, co-writer, and artist of the comic book, Sovereign: The Return Volume One. A 132-page action packed graphic novel that reflects my LOVE and PASSION for the anime, manga, movies, American comics, and video games I read and watched and played growing up.

To bring up something I mentioned in the beginning of this article. Just think of how you felt when you watched Evangelion, Robocop, Ninja Scroll, the Matrix (the first one) or when you read Dragon Ball, Fist of the North Star or played Final Fantasy 6 (back then known as 3) Chrono Trigger, Metroid, Suikoden and Mega Man.

That's what I'm bringing you here with this comic. I want every page to bring a smile to your face, and when you finally reach the end, leave you NEEDING what's to come in Volume 2.

And I'm not alone on this ride. With me on the writing side will be Fred Kennedy with Joshua Perez on colors and Deron Bennett on letters. Now I know what you're thinking this is a big thing putting out a 132-page OGN. And I agree but I've got the experience to back me up. As an artist, I've worked for Planet of the Apes for Boom! Studios, Underworld and Jinnrise for IDW Publishing and a variety of books for many other publishers. I've been at this game for ten years and I've met and become friends with a lot of great creators.

And some of them have even contributed to the campaign like Jeffrey "CHAMBA" Cruz, Tradd Moore, Travel Foreman, CREON and Khary Randolph.
