Madius Comics: An Overview

We are Madius, and we are comics. That's a bold and ballsy statement, we know, but hang on and let us explain it a little first. We are a group of comic creators with a vision of bringing fun, fresh, funky and downright FANTASTIC comics into the hands of comic enthusiasts and comic lovers across the globe. Still with us? Good. Madius are writer/letterer Rob Jones, writer/artist Nick Gonzo, writer Michael Sambrook and Artist/Designer Brad Holman, and we decided that we wanted to create comics our own way, without constraints or boundaries.

Madius have been going since February 2015 and have, we think, an impressive 11 comics under our belt (at least, when Thought Bubble Sequential Festival in Leeds, UK is over with anyway!) and all are as varied and mad-capped as one another. We want people to buzz about comics, as they are an amazing medium, for pushing boundaries, furthering causes and generally being a whole heap of fun! Our titles are: Papercuts and Inkstains, an anthology series featuring zany stories, larger than life tales and an ongoing tale of the crappiest cultists to ever bring forth the apocalypse, featuring the artistic talents of creators such as Rosie Packwood, Mike Smith, Angela Sprecher, Brian Burke, Jim Lavery, Dan Butcher and Rory Donald, to name but a few, 50 Signal, created by Nick Gonzo, is a story about a Spaceman and his symbiotic, vat grown space ship who are discovering the joy of exploring a vast and knowledge rich universe, Ramlock Investigates, written by Jones/Sambrook and with art by Drew Bristow, is an anthropomorphic buddy comedy about the worlds worst detective and his long suffering sidekick…oh and did we mention they were a pig and a goat? Also…there's a ninja octopus with a bow. What more could you want? There's The Kings Leap a classical tale of viking swords and sorcery, written by Rob Jones and with art by Gareth Sleightholme, which is heavy metal distilled into comic book form, Average Joe, from creative duo, Rob Jones and Leon McKenzie and with art by Brad Holman, is the story of the Saxon end of the world and how the apocalypse forces one man to start actually living his life, Funk Soul Samurai, another creation from the manic mind of Nick Gonzo, which is the best 90's MTV cartoon never made and Tragic tales of Horrere, a Horror anthology of epic proportions, created by Jones/Sambrook and Alisdair Wood and featuring the art styles of Mr Wood, Al McLauchlan, Neil Ford, Gareth Sleightholme and Ian McQue.

Papercuts is hitting a bumper issue 3 right now, 50 Signal is at issue 2 and the others are all issue ones, so we are at a fantastic time to jump on board the ride! Don't believe us, well we've had a slew of fantastic reviews recently. Here's a selection of them for you:

We also had our first convention outing at Nottingham Comic Con on October 24th where we splash landed onto the UK convention scene at the amazing Nottingham Comic Convention.

Three things, really struck us whilst we were exhibiting, and helped to alleviate any doubts in our mind about starting up a comic imprint:

1: Being able to say that you've given a child their first EVER comic, signed sealed and delivered to them is a truly amazing experience, and we sincerely hope Barnaby and his brother enjoy their copy of Ramlock..

2: Having a young lad, resplendent in Adventure Time cosplay, excitedly show you their own comics they've been making is an incredible thing… but then when they bust out an AMAZING Hellboy pic and you explain that Duncan Fegredo is downstairs and he is a regular Hellboy artists and seeing that boy's face light up, well that's a treasure! Then having that same young lad run back to us with a Fegredo sketch next to his own, well that right there is why comics are an amazing force. He was over the moon!

3: Finally, we chatted to an encumbered parent who wasn't a comic book fan, but they bought a copy of Nick Gonzo's 50 Signal purely because they've enjoyed the chat with us. Well that same parent came back to us about an hour later, excitedly proclaiming the book to be incredible. We didn't tell him we knew this, but again…this is what comics are all about. Ego stroking.
