Malaysia Bans Ultraman Comic That Calls Title Character Allah
Reports out of Kuala Lumpur say that the Malaysian government have banned a translation of an Ultraman comic that refers to the Japanese superhero as "Allah".
In a statement from the Home Ministry it is said that the Malay language edition of Ultraman: The Ultra Power contained elements that could undermine the public order and morals. It went on to say that Ultraman is idolised by many children and equating him with Allah would confused Muslim youth and damage their faith.
The character is very popular in Malaysia where both the series from the 1960s and the comics have been translated for the populace.
The decision has led to widespread ridicule among Malaysian Facebook and Twitter users. Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin asked, "Apa salah Ultraman? (What wrong did Ultraman do?)"
The Home Ministry said that only Ultraman: The Ultra Power has been banned, other issues of Ultraman were unaffected.
