Page 45 Encourages Comic Stores To Buy British

Expecting To Fly 1a

Expecting To Fly #1 by John Allison, Page 45's best-selling comic of 2015.

Talking to comic stores in London earlier this week, I was told of plans to slash orders for American comics in the light of the new Diamond UK prices, reflecting currency changes and the plunging pound in the face of the vote for Brexit. There was much doom and gloom expressed, the belief that the inelasticity of the comic book buying public has been overstretched and some tough choices were to be made.

Page 45 in Nottingham, one of Bleeding Cool's favourite comic stores in the world, has some sage advice to give courtesy of store owner Stephen L Holland.

Their current stock, over £100,000 wasn't rising in price, because they already had them.

  1. British comics and graphic novels won't see their prices rise, even when restocked!
  2. Page 45 restocks from non-Diamond sources may also not rise for some time.

And, for overseas buyers, Page 45 is now even cheaper and they ship worldwide…

But most of all, they encourage other retailers to buy British.

The British Comic Publishing Industry has undergone a complete metamorphosis since Page 45 opened 21 years ago.

Thanks to so many phenomenal self-publishers and the likes of SelfMadeHero, Avery Hill Publishing, Improper Books, Myriad Books, Walker Books, Jonathan Cape, Soaring Penguin Press, Knockabout, Phoenix Comics etcetera a huge proportion of Page 45's best-selling comics and graphic novels are, as I said, British. Our biggest-selling comic and graphic novel last year were both British!

They have a point…
