When People Who Drive Actual Tanks For a Living, Got to See the Batmobile
The relationship between Americans and their military service people is an… interesting one. But DC Comics has recently sent still-Batman writer Tom King and CCO/President Jim Lee over to Kuwait with the The United Service Organizations (USO) to a) promote Batman for the character's 80th anniversary b) entertain the nearly 12,000 U.S. military members stationed in Kuwait. King also wrote Sheriff Of Babylon, which drew from his time as a member of the CIA working in the Middle East.
Anyway, they were joined by DC Comics actors Nafessa Williams, who plays Anissa Pierce/Thunder on Black Lightning, Candice Patton and Danielle Panabaker who play Iris West Allen and Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost on The Flash. They also got to screen the first epiode of upcoming series Pennyworth, about Alfred moving from the SAS to becoming the butler for the Waynes, that everyone else will get to see at the end of July.
And DC brought the 'Tumbler' Batmobile along with them. That's right, you can watch people who drive tanks for a living cooing over a Batmobile prop from the movies.
The tour went across five military bases in Kuwait, Camp Buehring, Camp Arifjan, Ali Al Salem, Camp Patriot and Al Jaber.
DC issues the following PR quote from Jim Lee, who is signing a copy of Avengers Vs X-Men above, "It was an absolute honor to meet with brave service members that exemplify real life heroism. These heroes inspire the world every day with their valor and commitment to freedom, the same courageous qualities that Batman has symbolized for eight decades. DC is extremely proud to have joined forces with the USO to deliver an unprecedented Batman experience to our troops."
So much so that they orchestrated cosplay contests between military members, which must have been a sight. Did everyone come as The Punisher?
Tom King shared his experience as a former CIA counterterrorism operations officer and his transition into comic books and writing Batman. Jim Lee also taught an art masterclass for service members interested in illustration, while actresses Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker and Nafessa Williams met with fans, signed autographs, participated in panel discussions and made special unit visits to service members on the job.
You know, they still prefer the Punisher more.
In true superhero style, DC and the USO orchestrated exclusive screenings, cosplay contests, and special group panels where acclaimed DC writer Tom King shared his experience as a former CIA counterterrorism operations officer and his transition into comic books and writing Batman. Artist Jim Lee also taught an art masterclass for service members interested in illustration, while Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker and Nafessa Williams met with fans, signed autographs, participated in panel discussions and made special unit visits to service members on the job.
Alo from the PR, Alan Reyes, USO Chief Operating Officer is quoted as saying "The USO is honored to join forces with DC to bring this first-of-its-kind tour to service members in Kuwait. As we close out Military Appreciation Month, this tour will strive to share America's appreciation and support with our men and women in uniform. We are also excited to extend our partnership with DC beyond this tour by distributing Batman-themed USO2GO kits to service members across the globe."
That's right, DC and the USO are sending service members around the world a special Batman-themed USO2GO kit featuring comics, movies, TV shows, games and more. Apparently 'the kit will offer a fun diversion for service members stationed in remote locations around the globe, connecting them to home and all things Dark Knight.'
Is it just me, or is this kind of thing really, really weird? Probably just me. I'm probably just too British sometimes. I'm sure everyone involved appreciated it.
