Books With Pictures – Eugene – a New Comic Shop for Oregon in 2020…
Books With Pictures is a comic book store in comic-book-fashionable Portland, Oregon run by Katie Proctor. And, announced this month the brand is now expanding into neighbouring town Eugene, with a new store, Books With Pictures – Eugene, setting up to launch in 2020 from comic book tutor and curator Andréa Gilroy, in conjunction with Katie.
In the video below, Andréa talks through her plans, her rationale, her approach to have the same kind of inclusivity that Books With Pictures strives for in Portland, just a hundred miles down Route 5. As well as an appeal for investors… if that's you, feel free to get in touch.
Books With Pictures – Portland opened in 2016 and has become a firm fixture in the comic book community that has seen a number of comic book publishers and creators move there in recent years, following the path initially set by Dark Horse Comics in the eighties, now including Image Comics, Oni Press, IDW and the CBLDF, as well as creators including Gail Simone Brian Bendis, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Rick Remender, Greg Rucka, Jeff Parker, Chris Roberson, Steve Lieber, Alex Ross, Jen Van Meter, Colleen Coover, Emi Lenox, and more. But could Eugene be a new draw? It's home to the University Of Oregon and has its own comics studies courses and classes as part of its English department.
Books With Pictures Portland also just completed a move to its new expanded location, and had their grand reopening last month with the launch party for Dylan Meconis' new graphic novel, Queen of the Sea, taking over the location of a previously well regarded bookstore, Longfellow's Books which closed in 2018 following the death of owner Jon Hagen.
