Booze Geek – Game Of Thrones Special!
By Dylan Gonzalez
Beer: Fire and Blood Red Ale
Brewery: Ommegang Brewery
With the new season of Game of Thrones now on, Ommegang Brewery has released the third in their special line of beers made in conjunction with HBO and the show. The third release is called Fire and Blood, the bottle adorned with one of three dragons depending on which one you grab. To go in line with the concept of fire, it was brewed with ancho chilies.
Fire and Blood is blood red in color and pours a thick, lasting head, looking much like a soapy froth. There was lots of carbonation bubbling up from the bottom of my glass. It gave off some scent of spiciness, clearly from the ancho chilies, but it was more yeasty than anything, with some hints of cherries.
When I finally got to drink it, I noticed a number of flavors present. It was surprisingly sweeter than I expected, with a distinctive cherry and other dark fruit taste. Malts and rye were also present. As for the chilies, I detected just a hint of spiciness in the beginning and as I drank, it became more noticeable. The spiciness does not make the beer undrinkable, though, and really adds to this giant mix of flavors.
What I did notice halfway through drinking Fire and Blood is that it really was not much of a red ale. Sure, if you want to go by color, yes, it is very red, but all the qualities I have mentioned so far made it more like a Belgian ale.
On the palate, Fire and Blood was not difficult to drink. It is not a sipper like some other beers I have had, but one that you should enjoy drinking slowly. Despite what looked like heavy carbonation, I did not find it to be bothersome nor did I with the chilies, which I expected to make the beer difficult to put back.
Overall, I enjoyed Fire and Blood. Take the Black Stout was the better brew, but this one is certainly interesting enough to warrant buying a bottle. So pop open one and enjoy as the new season of Game of Thrones unfolds.
