ComiXology To Provide Guided Reading To All Publishers And Creators
While the iPad may have introduced man to full screen digtal comics reading, as Jim Lee pointed out, many still enjoy the guided reading experience, zooming in on panels and making the story flow, that was popular on mobile phone readers.
Well, ComiXology is announcing a new program to bring that experience to all digital comics, not just those put together by the big boys, the Guided View Authoring Tools early adopters program. They state;
"The private, invitation-only Alpha program provides creators and publishers with a tool-set to prepare their comics for comiXology's patent-pending Guided View– the industry standard navigation technology that enables readers to experience comics full screen or panel-to-panel.
The Guided View Authoring Tools program will help level the playing field by giving independent creators and publishers an equal chance for visibility in the digital marketplace through a standard format and ubiquitous platform."
TOKYOPOP, Devil's Due, Arcana Comics and Scott Admunson, creator of Barbarian are reported as among early invites for the alpha testing. That more spots will be made available to more publishers and creator for Beta – signup is available at the company's website. And that the final product will be made available to all.
The patents for such reading systems may end up being the most valuable thing such companies own – many believe that patents are what is keeping the investments in rival online reader Wowio going. But making something like this widely available will not only be of value to many, but may cement ComiXology as the digital choice for comic book publishers – are they about to become the Diamond of digital?
