Everything Old Is New: Archie Jumbo Comics #6 75th Anniversary Celebration
Archie is still riding the 75th year wave, and rightfully so. They have so much to show new fans, and so much history to talk about, why not?
We open with Jughead #200. Growing up in the 90's, Jughead was my favorite Archie title. It still is! But for me, it was artist Rex W. Lindsay who really drew me in. His modern, unique style has always been extremely eye appealing to me. He gave Jughead life in ways I hadn't yet seen (though Samm Schwartz also does the same with Jughead) and his adventures were unique and fun. That's when I learned that Jughead, like me, was a huge fan of anime and manga. Wise beyond his years, and a fan of food, I found my inspiration. In the opening story written by Robot Chicken creator Tom Root, Jughead's metabolism is stolen by a witch. This comic is pretty important in the Archie universe, as this is when Jughead learns that Sabrina is in fact a witch. But in true Jughead fashion, it doesn't phase him.
The book also features write ups from various writers, creators, and even some TV personalities talking about what Archie meant to them as a child, or about the story, artist, or writer we are about to see. This book tries to include many of their characters that don't get a lot of print time any more (such as That Wilkin Boy), but I feel like they should have done more. So many of the stories in this book are Jughead centered. That's all well and good if this were a focus on Jughead's history, but this is supposed to be 75 years of Archie as a whole. Maybe each of these 75th Anniversary Books have a specific focus on each character, but I still don't think they really need to do that. And even if you wanted to keep it centered on a certain character, pull more Golden Age stories into the mix. One Bob Montana story is simply not enough!
