France Puts On Sales In 2012, And Titeuf Vol 13 Sells A MillionIn France, the production of comic book volumes in print has increased for the seventeenth year, according to Gilles Ratier, secretary general of ACBD.

In a report that points out economic difficulties, confluct between publishers and creators, and the rise of digital, 5565 new comic books were published in 2012, up 4.28% on the 4109 published in 2011. Of these 2234 were translated. 1586 of which were from East Asia, 448 from the USA.

And that 1510 comic creators are making a living, even if it's a small one, in France. And that the country hosted 489 comic festivals and exhibitions through the year.

Approximate sales figures for the year include;

1,000,000 for Titeuf Vol 13 by Zep (Glénat)

450,000 for Lucky Luke Vol 5 by Daniel Pennac, Tonino Benacquista and Achdé (Lucky Comics)

440,000 for Largo Winch Vol 18 by Jean Van Hamme and Philippe Francq (Dupuis)

440,000 Blake And Mortimer Vol 21 by Yves Sente and André Juillard (Blake et Mortimer)

350,000 for XIII Vol 21 by Yves Sente et Iouri Jigounov (Dargaud Benelux)

250,000 for Chat Vol 17 by Philippe Geluck (Casterman)

250,000 for Kid Paddle Vol 13 by Midam (Mad Fabrik)

250,000 for Lou! vol 6 by Julien Neel (Glénat)

240,000 for Petit Spirou Vol 16 by Tome and Janry (Dupuis)

200,000 for Blagues de Toto Vol 9 by Thierry Coppée (Delcourt).

180,000 for XIII Mystery vol 5 Fabien Nury and Richard Guérineau (180 000)

In comparison, the best selling US comics were the Simpsons titles, selling from 50 000 to 120 000 copies each, Walking Dead volumes selling from 70 000 to 75 000 each and Jim Davis' Garfield, selling from 50,000 to 55,000. Batman and Kick Ass sold around 25,000 copies each.

Manga translations fared better, with three Naruto volumes selling 225 000 copies each. Five volumes of One Piece sold between 135 000 and 165 000 copies each, Strong World sold 45,000 with a guidebook selling 40,000. Six volumes of Fairy Tail sold from 85,000 each, three volumes of Black Butler sold from 66,000 to 72,000, five volumes of Bleach sold from 50,000 to 60,000 each and four volumes of Bakuman sold from 35,000 to 5,000 each.
