Katy Perry, The Comic, The Hacker And Two Comic Conventions
I've spent a long week carefully peeling. Here is the exclusive Katy Perry biography comic from Brett's Comic Pile, picked up at NYCC. The inside cover had this big sticker over it.
Funnily enough it's the 2012 San Diego Exclusive version…. that wasn't available at San Diego.
And underneath the sticker, it explains everything. Apparently it was meant to have been published through Bluewater Comics… and now isn't. And reprints some private e-mails to make the point…
So I contacted both Darren of Bluewater and Brett, and it got even stickier. Darren Davis repeatedly told me that this wasn't a story. You be the judge of that.
What happened was that Brett arranged for a variant cover of the Katy Perry Biography comic from Bluewater as a San Diego Exclusive from his booth, flying the cover artist in to sign copies. The book never arrived, though Darrren tells me that he has proof the Convention Center received it.
Brett demanded his money back, which he has still not received.
Brett then used a mutual acquaintance to obtain the Katy Perry comic biography files from the Bluewater server, which Brett then printed himself with his cover and the list of e-mails above.
Bluewater threatened legal action. As well they might,
They agreed that Brett could sell this San Diego exclusive as a New York exclusive, 100 copies, if the inside cover was stickered over. And now they are going to do another cover for 2013, in order to help Brett make his money back.
The question is… where are the missing original San Diego variant copies?
