SingAlongADoctorWho – Matt Smith Live At The Proms
Some TV shows do special musical episodes. Buffy, Scrubs, that kind of thing. Some like Glee do nothing but. But Doctor Who? Doctor Who does the Proms.
A series of popular classical music events over two months, the Proms is a BBC institution since the twenties, held at the Albert Hall, Carodgan Hall and in the open air in London every year.
Two years ago, Russell T Davies wrote The Music Of The Spheres, featuring footage of David Tennant interacting with the Proms, with appearances of Freema Agumen and Doctor Who monsters on stage.
This year, Matt Smith is taking on the role, and and is performing it live alongside Karen Gillen. The show will be transmitted on BBC Radio 3 on Saturday 24th from 7.30-9.45pm, and can be listened to worldwide.
Musical numbers will include Mars from Holst's Planets Suite and John Adams's Short Ride In A Fast Machine.
The evening will also include a special Twenty Minutes – Dance Of The Daleks in which Matthew Sweet investigates fifty years of the sounds of Doctor Who and how they were created.
TV broadcast will follow, and the event will likely be included in the next Doctor Who DVD box set.
