Virginia Comicon Impresses Once Again – And Maintains Its Five Dollar Ticket Price
By Dorian "Spin Dash" Bell
With over thirty years of events under their belts, Virginia Comicon continues to impress and offer great deals and selections on comics of all ages.
This past Sunday, Virginia Comicon held another of their 1 day events in Richmond, Virginia and once again from this reporters view it was another success in a long line of successes. Changing venues to a more secure and easily accessible location the con goers were treated to a slew of vendors offering comics ranging from Gold, Silver, Bronze and modern comics as well as those selling action figures, statues and other comic related merchandise. There was so much for convention goers to see and to revel in that from those I spoke to not one of them said they didn't walk away with something.
Comic fans of all ages came out to this event and books were flying off of shelves and out of boxes as many came prepared with their lists of issues they needed and were searching for and rightfully so as once again a Virginia Con offered a selection of books that most only dream about. While you would be shelling out some cash for the key issues that were present such as Incredible Hulk issue 181 (first full appearance of Wolverine) to the most pristine issue of X-Men issue 1 I have ever seen, I will tell you they are worth every cent as they were some of the most beautiful copies I had ever laid eyes on. I myself walked away with a book I needed for my Uncanny X-Men collection, an Uncanny X-Men 129 first appearance of Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost as well as over 50 other issues of X-Men all for a buck. That is one of the great things about Virginia Comicon as there are so many vendors selling books for a dollar and even cutting deals if you buy multiple books.
Art goers also had a lot to shop for as many of the Virginia Con staples such as Dan Nokes and the Lacey Brothers were on hand offering their original artwork for patrons. I would be remised if I didn't give Lee Lacey a shout out for the awesome Howard the Duck commission he did for me. It is simply wonderful and is a testament to the quality of work the artists in the area brought to the table for this convention. There were so many different art styles, motifs and merchandise for sell from plushies to steam punk to awesome masks that each way you turned you were sure to find something that peaked your interest.
Cosplayers as well were treated at this event as once again the cosplay contest took center stage and these fantastic artist come out if full form. From a full Avengers line up to the best Black Cat you will ever see (hey Sony I think you should cast her in ASM 3). Ponies, anime characters, original characters, different interpretations of classics, even Ghostbusters were present and I saw so many kids in costume as well that it just was fantastic to see the youth so ingrained and engaged in the fandom.
An addition to the con recently has also been panels, and I will tell you the panels this event were like a trip down memory lane. Panels dedicated to Ghostbusters, G.I. Joe and so many more nostalgic cartoons and creations it was truly fun for anyone who attended and I heard people talking about them in the hall afterwards.
Truly there was something here for everyone whether it was buying books or art, showing off your latest cosplay masterpiece or even if you just wanted to sit in a real Delorean with a real Flux Capacitor (sadly I couldn't go back in time) Virginia Comicon was a really great event as it always is. One thing I really enjoyed was that the new venue had a restaurant in the hotel. While many may not see this as a must have I will say it was nice that while the event was going on upstairs people could retreat downstairs to the quiet of the restaurant and grab a meal. This really came in handy for many who I saw had small children as I did and needed to get them fed before they became cranky. So a kudos to the organizers for this as it was a much needed and I think underappreciated addition.
At just five dollars admission it is possibly the best convention to get the bang for your buck. Their next event will be in June, and if you are in the area I would highly recommend stopping buy as you won't be disappointed.
