With shooting expected to commence this month and a projected January 2017 start, more details about Star Trek: Discovery surfaced on Saturday during a Q&A panel with ST:D writer-producers Kirsten Beyer and Nicholas Meyer at this weekend's Star Trek: Mission New York.

Beyer announced that she will be working on a new novel with David Mack and Simon & Schuster as well asa series of comics with Michael Johnson and IDW scheduled to coincide with ST:D's release.

Star Trek: Discovery is set in the "prime" universe (translation: not J.J. Abrams' cinematic universe), approximately ten years before the start of the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission and following the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery as they begin their journey of discovery. While it's expected to have approximately seven lead characters in all, ST:D's focal lead character will be a female human but not a captain…with "an event in Star Trek history, in the history of Starfleet" serving as the basis for the season-long storyline. With a 13 episode first-season commitment, ST:D will be available for viewing beginning January 2017 on CBS's subscription streaming service CBS All Access in the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix will stream all episodes of the series in 188 countries around the world (excluding USA and Canada), with each episode premiering on the streaming service 24 hours after it airs on CBS All Access.
