A State Of Zen: The Japanese Tea Ceremony At Katsucon 2017
I've never personally seen a real Japanese tea ceremony before, so I couldn't pass up the chance to see it live at Katsucon.
The Comiku Girls hosted the event, and they are 10 year veterans of the east coast convention scene, described in Katsucon's guide by the following quote:
Each has had a pencil (or brush) in their hand since they could hold one, & have been telling stories since they could talk. At conventions, they are artists, cosplayers, fairies & Japanese cultural panelists.
They have studied the tea ceremony extensively, the young ladies performed the ceremony for us and then gave us a very detailed history.
The main take home that we took from this was that tea was introduced in Japan during the 9th century, where it's safe to say it took off. Tea became immensely popular, causing such party games as competitive tea drinking, and of course the tea ceremony. There are several types of tea ceremonies in Japan, this ceremony was more Zen like than the others.
While I enjoyed the panel greatly, the detailed history of tea and the different types seemed a little discombobulated at times. Overall though it was wildly informative and very relaxing.
