The Phantom Menace Of The Opera – Hot Takes, Rewrites and Swipes With Vader: Dark Visions #3

This week saw the publication of Star Wars: Vader: Dark Visions #3. It's been regarded as a take on the story of The Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux. To such an extent that the cover artist Greg Smallwood seems to have found rather direct inspiration from one performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version.

The Phantom Menace Of The Opera - Star Wars: Vader: Dark Visions #3 Kick Off Controversy

But there has also been considerable fan disquiet over how that story was twisted into this one. Both stories feature a young woman drawn to a facial disfigured masked figure who wields power, who she, by all rights, should not be. In one, the Phantom. In another, Darth Vader.

But as a dark vision goes, it takes a very different path.

Katie, co-host of the Wampa's Lair podcast, has quite the thread looking at the comics influences, choices and consequences.

So, after receiving a lot of social media response, Katie has rewritten the story and posted it as fan-fic.

Sometimes she stills thinks about Lord Vader. He comes to her on bended knee. Apologizes for acting so brutishly. Begs for her forgiveness.

The place between her ribs stings with memory. He takes her hand and promises to never hurt her again.

Alone in the dark, she cries and cries and cries.

What do you think? Some have already objected to her rewriting other people's stories. Because of course, it's only cool when boys do that too.

One side note though, Chuck Wendig who was announced as the writer for Shadow Of Vader, what this comic was originally called, until he was fired by Marvel for, apparently, 'the negativity and vulgarity that my tweets bring… too much politics' had something else to note,
